Select and obtain a variety
I want to grow a variety
How to select a variety and check its availability
On our website you will find an overview of varieties protected by plant variety rights that are grown in selected countries.
You can easily check the current availability of the variety of interest on the page Where to obtain a variety?.
Here, you can use a practical filter based on the following characteristics:
- variety category (dessert apples, columnar apples)
- level of disease resistance (scab, powdery mildew, fire blight)
- harvest time (July to November)
- taste (from slightly acidic to sweet)
These filters will help you choose a variety that best suits your needs.
The varieties 'Bonita', Melinda® Dolcevita ('UEB 6581'), and Opal® ('UEB 32642') are so-called club varieties. They are intended exclusively for selected professional growers producing fruit for the fresh market under the conditions of a specific growers’ association ("club"). Their propagation material is therefore not publicly available to other growers worldwide. The aim of this system is to ensure the production of fruit of the highest quality.
However, apples of these varieties are available in selected retail chains worldwide. More information can be found in the individual variety descriptions or in the section I want to buy fruit.
I am a home gardener looking for a tree
Choose a variety based on the description on the specific variety page and look up a nursery which sells to amateur growers in your area on the page Where to obtain a variety?. Availability of trees of individual varieties varies across countries and seasons.

I have a nursery or orchard and would like to propagate trees or sell apples
Our varieties are protected by plant breeders' rights in order to prevent unauthorized propagation. Their propagation and sale are therefore only possible under a valid licence or sublicence agreement. Licence fees also help us co-finance further breeding activities.
If you are interested in growing and marketing our varieties, please contact us for more information about the conditions of a licence agreement for the variety in your area.
