At the beginning of September 2022 we hosted a visit of a group of nurserymen from South Tyrol. Thanks to its climatic conditions, this area is a very important centre of apple growing in Europe. Also some of our varieties (especially 'Bonita' and 'Topaz') have already gained a foothold there, with 'Topaz' being grown largely in organic production.
The group of South-Tyrolean nurserymen was led by an esteemed expert in pomology, Dr. Walter Guerra of the Research Centre Laimburg, Italy. Our station in Střížovice was one of the stages on their study-business trip to Czechia, during which they also visited other researchers, nurserymen and professional growers.
A highly respected magazine for fruit and wine growers Obstbau-Weinbau (which is very popular in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and other German-speaking countries) published a summary of their journey to fruit professionals in our country. We were glad to read positive comments on our breeding program (translated from German):
"The highlight of our study trip was undoubtedly the visit of the research station of the Institute of Experimental Botany in Střížovice.
...
The sales numbers suggest that this is perhaps the most successful apple breeding program focused on disease resistance."
